After has been one of the front figures in one of Sweden’s most significant bands both domestically and internationally during the 2000s and 2010s,
Gustaf Norén’s journey in Mando Diao ended in 2015.
New mountains had to be climbed and new paths had to be chosen.
Gustaf chose to move back to the hometown where it all began – home to Borlänge.
-The breakup came after a longer lack of the energy I felt as a young person. But also a spiritual longing for “My father’s farm”. This search led me home to Dalarna and that I started working at the junior high school where my father worked.
There in my hometown, I found among the students a creative joy and zest for life that gave birth to something new in me.
Borlänge, a city that would become an important part of Gustaf’s musical identity.
It was here that he once met Björn Dixgård and together they became one of Sweden’s most successful songwriting couples.
During Gustaf Norén’s time with Mando Diao, the band released several successful albums, including “Hurricane Bar” (2004), “Ode to Ochrasy” (2006), and “Give Me Fire!” (2009) and not least the album “Infruset” (2012) which was a huge success in Sweden and showed another side of Mando Diao and Gustaf Norén’s artistry. The album received great critical acclaim and became one of the band’s most beloved works, which also helped broaden their audience and cement their place in Swedish music history.
Now almost 10 years after his end in Mando Diao, Gustaf has landed in his own hometown. In addition to working as a music teacher, new creative areas are constantly being explored.
-I started playing more and more music. With my students, friends, neighbors, with my father, my children and with my brother Viktor.
Here I found a music-making that functioned as a gathering and healing force.
Music that can lead to harmony in both family and society.
In 2018, Gustaf and his brother Viktor Norén formed the band Gustaf & Viktor Norén, and they have since released several singles and albums together. Their music is a fusion of pop, folk and rock, and their collaborations demonstrate a deep creative chemistry and brotherly bond. Together they also traveled around Sweden to find uncut musical gems to create music with. This became the television program and Kristallen-nominated “Bröderna Noréns Underbara Resa”.
During all these musical ramifications, Gustaf has continued to compose and create his own music, in his studio – a barn in Dala-Floda, with inspiration from the ever-present: his own large family, 93-year-old neighbor Arne, the meadow outside the barn and his own spirituality .
-I found meaning and a heavenly gratitude slowly began to grow within me.
After almost seven years, that gratitude had grown so great that it began to express itself in melodies and lyrics. Everything would come forward, the sadness, worry, pain, battles, but above all the love and gratitude to everything and everyone who in my vicinity inspired and helped me when I needed it most.
Now I know that if I dare to show myself vulnerable and reach out a hand, there is always someone to help me up.
That knowledge makes me want to sing and play again, with joy in my heart.
This album, Dala Floda is dedicated to my friend Björn Dixgård. You, my great idol and lost brother, whom I miss in every tone. A sadness that over time turned into the enormous gratitude that I got to be a part of you.
